BOOKS SELECTED FOR NEXT READING PROGRAM
The steering committe of the Rockingham County Reads community reading program has selected two books for the upcoming season. The two books each stand alone on their own merits, yet both touch on some similar topics.
Same Kind of Different As Me is an inspiring story that at times reads like fiction but is incredibly true. Ron Hall is an international art dealer. His wife Deborah volunteers at a homeless shelter, where she has seen something special in a particular resident named Denver Moore. Deborah persuades Ron to volunteer at the shelter. Ron and Denver eventually develop a friendship, both enduring the tragedy of Deborah's death to cancer. They go on to grow in their respect and admiration for each other, each learning something about life and faith from the other.
Becoming Naomi Leon chronicles the life of a young Hispanic girl and her brother Owen, both of whom are being raised by their grandmother. Naomi's alcoholic mother, who disappeared seven years ago, suddenly returns and wants to take Naomi, though she has little interest in Owen. Naomi, Owen, and their grandmother set off for Oaxaca, Mexico to find the children's father who can sign papers making the grandmother their legal guardian.
Copies of the books will be available at all Rockingham County Public Library branches in November.
